Steppin’ Out in Pink

Thanks to you, we set record numbers this year!

A sea of walkers dressed in pink descended upon Gundersen Lutheran for the third annual Steppin’ Out in Pink in support of breast cancer research at the Gundersen Lutheran Norma J. Vinger Center for Breast Care. A record 3,700 walkers “stepped out” with family and friends, many sporting special team shirts or signs in honor of loved ones. 300 volunteers also walked, registered and acted as guides along the walking trail. An estimated 150 more vendors and entertainers took part in the event bringing the grand total to around 4,150 participants.

Then numbers surpassing last year’s phenomenal success (more than 3,400 walkers raising $230,000 dollars in 2007) was a challenging task, but the spirit of the community came through with even more people participating and raising an estimated $250,000 exceeding this year’s goal.

“The results are still preliminary, however they continue to amaze and astound us,” says Debbie Kroner, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation and Steppin’ Out in Pink co-coordinator. “To see so many people in our community motivated to battle breast cancer is truly special. A simple thank you to participants, volunteers, sponsors and donors is not enough. So we give a “pink” thank you to everyone involved.”

The research being done at Gundersen Lutheran will change the way breast cancer is treated locally and nationally. “Our efforts are making a difference,” adds Kroner. “Involvement in Steppin’ Out in Pink means that you are improving breast cancer care everywhere.”

The Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation is continuing to accept donations for the Steppin’ Out in Pink event and those funds will be added to this years tally.
